With the current problems our country is facing with regards to our environment, the 1st Philippine Environment Summit will be held on February 09 to 11 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia. It will be a 3-day event wherein different programs and projects, including breakthroughs and innovations that will be a big boost to the social advancement and at the same time protecting our environment. An exhibit will also be featured showing eco-friendly products and services.
Having the theme “Greening Together, Growing Better” the summit will be graced by renowned leaders of the government, the church community, civic organizations and academia as plenary and resource speakers in breakout sessions and as exhibitors. In addition, lead members of environmental and civil society organizations, leaders of the business sector, as well as other individual and institutional environmentalists will be attending the summit.
Aside from the said attendees, His Excellency President Benigno Aquino III, Archbishop Luis Cardinal Tagle, former SC Justice Reynato Puno, and internationally renowned environmental activists Dr. David Suzuki and Dr. Vandana Shiva are some of the invited speakers, who will be sharing their insights about our environment. Also, leading Presidential aspirants in the coming national elections are also invited and they are to present their environmental agendas.
The Summit is co-organized by the Green Convergence — a large coalition of environmental and developmental organizations, networks and faith-based groups. Also supporting the event are the Energy Development Corporation, Tourism Promotions Board, Foundation of the Philippine Environment, PTFCF and Trans-Asia Renewable Energy.
The Summit aims to disseminate information to the public on the developments, achievements, challenges, programs and projects in relation to food safety, environment and natural resource protection and conservation and sustainable economy; strengthen and energize networking between and within the public and private sector and within and across various sectors and groups, formulate policy recommendations; and showcase convergence initiatives between and /or among government, civil society, business, and other sectors of society.
“In celebrating the advancements in environmental protection achieved through private and public initiatives, we hope to create an opportunity for all sectors to unite and collaborate,” says Green Convergence president Dr. Angelina Galang. “The 1st Philippine Environment Summit is a call to government and the Filipino people to unite in accelerating the drive towards national sustainable development.”
The schedule of the Summit will be plenary sessions in the morning and breakout sessions in the afternoon, and a simultaneous three-day exhibit. An awarding ceremony will also be conducted to recognizie LGU eco-champions. Then, the summit closes with the environment movement’s in coordination with the government and the business sectors having a resolution that will protect the environment in pursuit of sustainable development in the Philippines.
