Imagine a slice of your favorite bread wafting out with that distinct hot-off-the-oven-aroma. As you relish it bite after bite, have you ever wondered how that bread is made?

Of course, you want nothing but the best; and with bread as staple food, you want to make sure that the one you’re getting is safe and of the highest quality, and one that will give the best value for your money. So in buying bread next time, ask yourself for the following questions:

Does it have the qualities of good bread? Breads have different shelf lives. Some are good for 3, 5 or 7 days, while others stay at their best anywhere from 10 to 14 days.  So instead of merely looking for new stock or freshly delivered bread and reading expiry date on the pack, why not check the bread’s baking and delivery day to get more accurate information? Case in point: bread that expires in 5 days may actually be already 5 days old if its “Best Before” date is within 10 days. Aside from this, it is also important to look for other attributes such as softness, freshly baked aroma, great taste and nutritive value.

 Is the bread made with the finest quality ingredients? Go beyond what’s stated on the product label. Know if the ingredients are sourced from the best suppliers all over the world to ensure that you’re getting a product of the highest quality. Note also that the cheaper the price, the more likely the lower the quality may be. Let this be your guide for getting the best value of money.

Have you seen how the bread is made? Seeing how your bread is made is as important as knowing what it is made of. More importantly, it is your proof of manufacturer’s quality assurance. A manufacturer that’s honest and committed to high quality standards will be more than glad to show you around its bakery or plant to give you an idea of how things are done. If you do get this chance, check if their workers observe cleanliness. Are they wearing the proper attire such as head covers and face masks? Are the baking equipment and utensils clean and neatly placed? Do the floors of the production area—specifically hidden corners—look sanitized and clean? Is the the plant fully automated, making the bread untouched by human hands? If this is so, then you have nothing to worry about.

It will also be helpful to check out the trays and the trucks that are used in transporting the product. Are the trays clean and sanitized before use? Are the delivery vehicles free from pests and made of non-wood materials that are safe and contamination-proof?

Is the bread manufacturer ISO and HACCP certified? The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) are the certifications of assurance that the food manufacturer is the highest standards for food quality safety.

The ISO certification covers a wide range if qualifications from design and development, to manufacturing and distribution. A HACCP certification guarantees that the product was produced in a hygienic clean and pest-free environment, and is free from biological, chemical and physical contaminants.

So whenever you buy bread, look for the one that has all the qualities need not to go far. There’s no one that has all the qualities that consumers look for in a bread; a name that guarantees freshness by pulling out unsold breads everyday of delivery and replacing them with fresh stocks with color-coded seals on the pack; one that employs state-of-the-art manufacturing in the country’s largest bread plant where everything is fully automated and untouched by human hands and which encourages visitors to see how their breads are made; only the bread brand that’s ISO and HACCP certified: Gardenia.
